About WNYIMS
Western New York Incident Monitoring System is an independent nonprofit community response organization. We are not a government agency, we are not law enforcement, we do not replace 911, and we do not issue official emergency alerts. Every official warning shown on this site is published by the National Weather Service.
Mission & history
Formed by neighbors after repeated wind, ice, and flooding events across the Genesee Valley, WNYIMS exists to help our communities weather severe events: watch the forecast carefully, report hazards quickly, clear what we are authorized and qualified to clear, and support residents until normal services are restored.
Service area
Centered on Caledonia, NY (14423), covering Livingston, Genesee, Monroe counties. The coverage area is configurable and is expanded only with the capacity and partnerships to support it.
Leadership & accountability
- Board of directors with published bylaws and conflict-of-interest policy
- Operations Coordinator responsible for activation decisions
- Communications Officer responsible for all public statements
- Safety Officer with stop-work authority on any task
- After-action review published following every activation
Community partnerships
We work at the request of county emergency management, town highway departments, fire districts, and utility crews. We do not operate in an incident area without authorization from the agency having jurisdiction.
Transparency & annual reports
Annual reports include hours served, incidents supported, training completed, equipment purchased, and a summary of income and expenses. Published reports will be listed here as each fiscal year closes; nothing is listed until it has been approved by the board.
