About WNYIMS

The Western New York Incident Monitoring System, or WNYIMS, is a community-focused public-safety information platform built to improve situational awareness across Western New York. It does not issue official warnings, dispatch responders, replace 911, or direct emergency operations. It is not a government agency, law-enforcement body, or public-safety authority.

Our mission

Our goal is to bring relevant incident, weather, transportation, aviation, and public-safety information together in one accessible platform for emergency-service agencies, responders, community partners, and the public.

WNYIMS is designed to complement official systems by making useful information easier to monitor and understand. We work with publicly available sources, authorized data partners, and members of the emergency-services community to continually expand coverage and improve the platform.

  • Displays official National Weather Service alerts and their affected areas, unaltered.
  • Renders live Doppler radar over a map of the coverage area.
  • Aggregates publicly available incident information from agency feeds, with generalized locations.
  • Accepts community hazard reports, which stay unverified until an authorized reviewer checks them.
  • Publishes clearly labelled WNYIMS monitoring notices when the platform itself has something to say.

Who WNYIMS serves

Fire, EMS, law-enforcement and emergency-management agencies; individual responders and dispatchers; community partners; and any member of the public who wants a clearer picture of what is happening nearby. Anyone can monitor this site without an account. Accounts exist only so authorized users can review community hazard reports and use the WNYIMS monitoring tools, and new accounts remain pending review until an administrator approves them. Access to these tools is not authorization to respond to anything.

Coverage area

Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Ontario, Orleans, Steuben, Wayne, Wyoming, Yates counties, centered on Caledonia, NY (14423). The coverage area is configurable and will only expand when the underlying data sources genuinely support it.

Information categories

Four kinds of information appear on this site and are always labelled distinctly: official National Weather Service alerts; public incident information from agency feeds; community-submitted, unverified hazard reports; and WNYIMS-authored monitoring notices. Our commitment to free access

WNYIMS is committed to keeping its services free for both participating agencies and the public. Agencies will not be charged subscription or onboarding fees, and public access will not be placed behind a required payment or donation.

Future donations will always be voluntary. Access to WNYIMS, agency participation, account approval, and core platform features will never depend on making a contribution.

Our nonprofit plan

WNYIMS is currently an independently operated project working toward becoming a formally established nonprofit organization. We believe a nonprofit structure will best support our public-service mission, long-term transparency, responsible governance, and continued collaboration with emergency-service agencies and community partners.

WNYIMS is not currently a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. It is not a registered 501(c)(3), and no contribution is tax-deductible.

Future funding and donations

Once the organization has been properly established and all required legal and financial systems are in place, WNYIMS may begin accepting voluntary donations. No donations are being accepted today. Future donations would support expenses such as:

  • Website hosting and technical infrastructure
  • Data feeds and third-party services
  • Monitoring and communications equipment
  • Platform development and maintenance
  • Coverage expansion
  • Community and agency outreach
  • Training, demonstrations, and educational materials

Donations would help sustain and improve the platform without changing our commitment to free access.

Community collaboration

WNYIMS is being shaped with input from firefighters, EMS personnel, law-enforcement professionals, dispatchers, emergency managers, technology partners, and members of the public. We welcome responsible partnerships, feedback, data-source opportunities, and suggestions that can improve public-safety awareness throughout the region.

It is not an emergency dispatch service, a replacement for 911, or a substitute for official agency communications and operational systems. Information may be delayed, incomplete, or unavailable depending on the source. Always follow official instructions and contact 911 during an emergency.

  • It does not deploy volunteers, operate units, or coordinate field response.
  • It does not act under the authority of any agency, and claims no partnership it does not have.
